Description:	Concordance / content analysis software. Alceste is a software for the Textual Data Analysis, developed by the C.N.R.S. with the support of the ANVAR. The method used by ALCESTE is the Descending Hierarchical Classification (HDC) which carries out successive splits of the text. It finds the strongest vocabulary oppositions in the text and then extracts some categories of representative terms.This methodology does not require a priori knowledge about the text to be analysed.

Description:	A text retrieval tool which generates concordances and indexes, and then displays the original text, the concordance, and the index in separate windows. Clicking on a word in any one of the three windows causes the other two windows to display the entries for the same word. Conc permits the user to define the sorting order and to limit the concordance to words that match specified patterns (GREP expressions). Also, in the beta version you can arrange the index according to frequency of occurrences. The maximum size of your corpus depends on your RAM; an old 68040 Mac with 24 RAM can handle half a million words.

Concorder
Description:	Concorder is a simple concordance program. This program allows you to take given texts (like books or plays) and find out the frequency of words that are spoken/thought/etc. This can be a handy way to find a favorite part of a story, and especially for English majors and professors, it allows them discover themes and overarching metaphors that may be embeded deep inside a text.

Edict Word Frequency Text Profiler No longer available
Description:	An on-line resource from edic.com's Virtual Language Centre. "Word frequency text profiling can be used in many ways to support teaching, learning and research. The Word Profiler compares all the words in a text with two word frequency lists, it provides a visual profile of the distribution of these words in a text by printing the different frequency bands in different colours. Words which are contained in the first list of most frequent words are left in the default text colour. Words which are found in the second word list (see below) are printed in red and words which are not in either of the lists are printed in blue. The off-list words are listed separately, and this list will contain new or unfamiliar words, as well as genre-specific words. "

Longman Mini Concordancer No longer available
Description:	A DOS-based concordancing/browsing package whose main function is to produce a Key-Word-In-Context (KWIC) concordance. The search string may be a single word, part of a word, or a regular expression using conventional wildcard symbols. Input to the program is normal ASCII text, rather than the pre-built indexes required by some programs. Limitations are its relative intolerance of non- English alphabets maximum 50,000 words text-size.

MicroConcord
Description:	A concordance program developed specifically for the language teacher and learner. The program enables the user to search through texts for words or combinations of words. Each occurrence is presented in a line of context. The context of any given occurrence can be expanded, and concordances can be sorted and analysed in different ways including statistically. It is a concordancer, operating on IBM PCs running DOS. DOS is faster than Windows but the number of concordance lines is limited to around 1,500, and you can't save a concordance except as a text file.

Oxford Concordance Program (OCP) and Micro- OCP No longer available
Description:	OCP makes word lists, indexes, and concordances from texts in any language and in any alphabet. It is a general purpose tool for text analysis and is suitable for applications such as stylistic analysis, vocabulary acquisition, dictionary making, textual editing, and content analysis. OCP operates on a raw text file and text can be prepared using any word processor that can produce a plain ASCII file. OCP accepts text in a variety of input formats. There are no restrictions on the use of characters in the text and up to 8 keyboard characters may be used to represent one letter. The text may contain editorial or other matter which is ignored by the program for the purposes of searching but included in the concordance contexts if desired. The user may define an alphabetical order. OCP is command-driven. The commands consist of simple English words. Every command has a built-in default and commands may be abbreviated down to the first three letters.

TEXTPACK
Description:	Originally designed for the analysis of open ended questions in surveys, TEXTPACK has been extended over the years to cope with many aspects of computer aided text analysis and most of content analysis. The majority of the procedures in TEXTPACK assist the user in exploring and editing texts; two procedures are designed for purely quantitative analysis. In the area of computer aided content analysis, TEXTPACK is suitable both for analysis with a strict dictionary approach and for empirical approaches. In addition, and as a major advantage, TEXTPACK contains special-purpose procedures which allow you to categorize/classify/tag any kind of text according to so called "content analytic dictionaries". The process of text classification is the goal of TEXTPACK and, thus, all other procedures function as service procedures which help to browse, to print a text file, to develop and validate a dictionary, and, most importantly, to help you to use the final numeric output, for example frequencies of categories, with statistical packages like SPSS or SAS for further quantitative or logical analyses. TextSTAT 2.4
Description:	TextSTAT is a simple programme for the analysis of texts. It reads ASCII/ANSI texts (in different encodings) and HTML files (directly from the internet) and it produces word frequency lists and concordances from these files. This version includes a web-spider which reads as many pages as you want from a particular website and puts them in a TextSTAT-corpus. The new news-reader puts news messages in a TextSTAT-readable corpus file. TextSTAT now reads MS Word and OpenOffice files. No conversion needed, just add the files to your corpus... In TextSTAT you can use regular expression which provides you with powerful search possibilities. The programme is multilingual. WordSmith
Description:	WordSmith Tools v. 3 is a suite of lexical analysis software programs for data-driven learning and research. Concord generates concordances showing a search-word in context, collocates, common word clusters. WordList generates alphabetical and frequency-order lists. KeyWords compares the frequency of words in a text with a reference corpus and identifies key words in the text. There are several other utility programs included. Mike Scott's web site includes screenshots, links for downloading from his website or from Oxford University Press and links to extras (such as word lists and lemma lists). WordSmith Tools v. 4 is under development and will eventually handle Unicode (double-byte) encoded text for Windows 95 and better.
