Memos

Writing memos is an essential part of developing your analytic understanding of the data and a way of building your theoretical reflections. Atlas.ti supports the creation and use of memos and these can be linked into the documents and coding in a project in a variety of ways. In particular, they can be linked with codes, passages of text or quotations.

To create a free memo

  1. Either click Memos:Create Free Memo. The Create Free Memo dialog opens. Type in a name, click OK.
  2. To edit the contents of this memo, click Memo Manager button
    (Atlas.ti Memo Manager Button), click the name of the memo click the editor button (Atlas.ti Editor button) and type in some content. Close window and save.
  3. Link this memo to a code, in Memo Manager right click on memo name, click Link Memo to:Codes and click the code you want, click OK.
  4. To see what codes or memos are linked, in either Memo Manager or Code Manager click on code or memo name, click Open Network button (Atlas.ti open network button) to see a network diagram showing linked objects.

 

To create a memo about a passage in a document

  1. Highlight the passage you want to write the memo about. click the Create Memo button (click OK. This creates a quotation with a memo/comment.
  2. To edit the contents of this memo, click Memo Manager button
    (Atlas.ti Memo Manager Button)click the name of the memo click the editor button (Atlas.ti Editor button) and change or type in some content. Close window and save.
  3. To see what the memo is linked to , in the Memo list   click on the memo name. click the Network button (Atlas.ti open network button) A network diagram opens showing the memo and the objects (if any) it is linked to.

 

Creating a memo about a document

There is no separate facility to link a memo to a document as a whole. Just highlight the first line of the documents and attach a memo to that (see above). But you can write a comment on the document (see below)

To create comment on the document

  1. click the Primary document name in the primary document pull-down menu.
  2. click Documents:Edit Comment. An editor opens. Type in your comments and save and close.
