Retrieving

Displaying the coded text in context

With some text coded you can inspect the documents to see how they are coded. This is a most important process in re-contextualising your coding.

To retrieve coded text

  1. For any document displayed, Atlas.ti always shows the associated coding in the margin area.
  2. It it is not displayed click Views:Margin Area. Click on a coding bracket to show exactly what text is linked to the code. See Figure 1.

Retrievals

Having done some coding you will want to see what text you have coded. The process is called retrieval. The retrieved text can be cut and pasted to your word processor. There are often several ways to do this.

To retrieve coded text

  1. click the Codes Manager button (Atlas.ti Codes Manager button)
  2. click the code you want to retrieve, click Output:Quotations for Selected Code .
  3. click Yes , to include comments. click Editor, click OK.
  4. An edit windows open with a document listing all the quotations for the selected code with any comments. This can be saved or printed. The contents can be cut and pasted to your word processor.

Codes, jump to text

Having examined all the text segments that are coded to a particular code, it is useful to be able to be able to go back to the document(s) from which the segments came to recontextualise the extracts.

To recontextualise coded extracts

  1. click the Codes Manager button (Atlas.ti Codes Manager button)
  2. In the Codes Manager window click on a code. If there is only one quotation linked to the code then it appears highlighted in context in the document showing in the primary document area.
  3. If there are two or more quotations linked to the code then a code quotations list window opens. See Figure 2. click any one of these and the quotation appears highlighted in the primary document area.
