Retrievals

In MAXqda it is possible to see what text in a document is coded directly by displaying the document in the Text Browser pane. Alternatively you could retrieved all the text coded at the same code whatever document it is in and display this retrieved text in the Retrievals pane.

Displaying the coded text in context

With some text coded you can inspect the documents to see how they are coded. This is a most important process in re-contextualising your coding.

To see exactly what text is coded.

When a document is displayed in the Text Browser any coding you have done shows as bars with titles in the code column to the left.

  1. click the coding bar to see exactly what text is coded. See Figure 1

Retrievals

Having done some coding you will want to see what text you have coded in the same way. The process is called retrieval. The retrieved text can be cut and pasted to your word processor.

To retrieve all the text coded at a code.

  1. Activate all the documents you want to retrieve from (e.g. right click the text group name in the Document System pane, click Activate All Texts.)
  2. Activate a code. ( right click a code name in the Code System pane, click Activate.)
  3. The text coded to that code in the active documents is displayed in the Retrieved Segments pane. See Figure 2.
  4. The contents can be saved or printed (e.g. click Project:Export:Retrieved Segments menu). The text contents can be cut and pasted to your word processor.

Codes, jump to text

Having examined all the text segments that are coded to a particular code, it is useful to be able to go back to the document(s) from which the segments came to recontextualise the extracts.

To recontextualise coded extracts,

Either,

  1. If you have just done a retrieval of text coded to a code.
  2. click in the blue headed information area to the left of the retrieved text. See Figure 2. The coded text segment appears highlighted in context in the document in the Text Browser pane.

Or,

  1. right click the code name in the Code System,
  2. click Overview of Coded Segments to open the Coded Segments manager. See Figure 3.
  3. click any of the segments in this list to highlight the text in context in the Text Browser pane.
