Attributes and variables

Variables, also known as attributes, are familiar in quantitative research, but can also be used in qualitative analysis. Typically each case in a study might be assigned a value for each variable. (They may have no value if the variable is not applicable.) Common examples are the gender of a respondent - male or female, age of respondent in years and place of residence.

Too set up attributes or variables in a project

  2. The Create/Edit Document Attributes dialog opens.
  3. click Create a new Attribute radio button.
  4. Type in the new attribute name and click Apply button.
  5. The new attribute appears in the list on the left. See Figure 1.
  6. click the new attribute name in this list and click Value tab. Type in a value and click Apply.
  7. Repeat as many times as needed for other values. (N.B. by default there are values for unassigned, unknown and not applicable already entered.) click Close.
