Matrix searches and sets

NVivo shares with N6 the ability to combine a variety of Boolean and proximity searches in matrix searching and it follows the same concept of coding on in that every search produces a new node. Nodes and documents can be arranged into sets that can be used to control a variety of activities including searching and documents can be gathered into cases to support case-based work. Like MAXqda it supports variables, called attributes in the program, but these can be applied to nodes and cases as well as documents.

NVivo's text searching facilities are very sophisticated and have a lot in common with N6 and Atlas.ti. They all incorporate ways of specifying words so that a variety of related words, phrases and alternative spellings can be found.


Like Atlas.ti, NVivo includes a function for creating diagrams where all the objects can be linked to the nodes, documents and memos in the project. NVivo allows a greater variety of diagram forms than Atlas.ti but it does not come with the built in tools for determining the different kinds of relations that Atlas.ti does though you can create your own relations. However, it does allow you to represent the relationship between objects in a variety of ways in different diagrams whereas in Atlas.ti pairs of objects in networks can only be linked in a single way.
