Analysing a video

Videos are analysied by placing clips that are related to one another into a collection, rather like sections of text are placed into a code. Clips can also be assigned keywords and these can be searched to explore relationships between clips.

To create a collection

  1. In the Data window click the Collection node (Collection node), click Add Collection.
  2. The Add Collection dialog opens.
  3. Type in the Collection name in the Collection ID box
  4. Type in your name in the Owner box.
  5. Select a keyword group from the Default Keyword Group drop down menu. click OK.

Creating clips

A clip is started and ended by a time code. Therefore where ever you select your clip it will start at the time code preceeding and end with the time code following a selection. This may mean the video clip becomes longer than you intended. The only way to have the clip start and end where you want it to is to insert time codes at the points you want a clip to start and end. See Time codes.

To create a clip

  1. Identify the part of the video you want to create as a clip
  2. Highlight the corresponding part of the transcript in the Transcript window. If this is mid-text Transana will automatically extend the video so it starts and ends with a time code. You could therefore inset time codes at exactly where you want the clip to start and end.
  3. Move your mouse pointer over the highlighted text and hold down the left mouse button and drag the selection to the Collection node (Collection node) you created.
  4. The Add Clip dialog opens type in the name of the clip in Clip ID and double click on any Keywords you want to add to the Clip Keywords. click OK.
  5. The Clip now appears in you collection as a clip node (Clip icon).
  6. To view a clip double click on the clip node (Clip icon) in the data window and click play in the video window.
