Learning outcomes

  1. How to develop an a priori coding framework.
  2. How to undertake coding and move from line-by-line to longer passages.

Part 5 looks at the coding of the transcripts. Sally used NVivo to do this. She used a set of codes that was, in part, constructed from the issues she had identified in her interview schedules. This was the first version of her coding frame. She further developed this in NVivo. Sally started by doing line-by-line coding, but soon found this unsatisfactory and started coding much longer passages of text. She also found she needed to move away from the detailed coding she had done in NVivo in order to get a wider view of the key themes in her analysis.
