A lecture in two parts on ethnography and participant observation by Graham R Gibbs taken from a series on research methods and research design given to masters (graduate) students at the University of Huddersfield.

Examines the nature of ethnography, looks at some classic examples of ethnographic work using participant observation and considers some of the issues of managing the research role when doing participant observation.

What to observe in Participant Observation

Looks at the details of observing and taking field notes during participant observation. Collecting information about settings, events and social differences are considered as well as creating indicators, typologies (both emic and etic) and charts as ways of recording data about the research setting.
