A lecture in three parts on the practicalities of undertaking social research by Graham R Gibbs taken from a series on research methods and research design given to masters (graduate) students at the University of Huddersfield.

Practical Issues of Social Research

Looks at the reality of undertaking research compared with the normative model found in textbooks. It also discusses negotiating access into the field and maintaining good relations there.

Writing Up Social Research

Looks at the different forms of reporting research such as the journal article (the academic write up), the report (with executive summary), the presentation, the poster and the press release. The kind of language used in reports is considered along with the key sections of research reports.

The Ethics of Social Research

Looks at how social research can be justified in light of the costs associated with it. A range of questionable practices are examined, which do not rule out research but need ameliorating if possible and justifying by the gains from doing the research.
